Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani said he experienced a “significant spiritual experience” while in a coma during a recent hospitalization caused by pneumonia.
The 81-year-old politician revealed the episode upon returning to the program America’s Mayor Live last Wednesday (13), after spending several days hospitalized in critical condition.
According to Giuliani, the experience happened while he was “out of it” and involved a kind of judgment before Saint Peter. The former mayor said he saw his longtime friend and former adviser Peter J. Powers, who died in 2016, and who allegedly told him “very meaningful words” during the episode.
Giuliani said that upon waking up, he immediately insisted on reporting what he had experienced and asked his son Andrew to record part of the account on video. He also stated that he spoke with a priest at the hospital after the incident and said he intends to share more details in the future.

The former mayor was hospitalized in early May after developing viral pneumonia aggravated by respiratory problems associated with exposure to debris from the September 11 attacks, according to people close to him. During the most critical period, Giuliani received mechanical ventilation and entered a brief coma.
Despite the scare, Giuliani said on his program The Rudy Giuliani Show that he is in advanced recovery and feels “100% better,” although he admitted he is still fully resuming his activities.
