Erin Murphy, who as a child played Tabitha, Samantha’s daughter in “Bewitched”, revealed that Elizabeth Montgomery, her mother on the series, was not much like her character in real life.
Bewitched, an iconic American television series, aired from 1964 to 1972. The show, which mixed comedy and fantasy, followed Samantha, a witch married to a mortal who tried to live a suburban life.
According to Murphy, 61, Montgomery was very different from the housewife she portrayed in the sitcom. “She was nothing like Samantha,” she said during an appearance on “The Magnificent Others With Bill Corgan”.

“I spent a large part of my life thinking: ‘Well, I want to be a stay-at-home mom because my two biggest role models, my mother and Elizabeth Montgomery, were stay-at-home moms.’ Maybe it was in my teenage years and early adulthood that I realized Elizabeth Montgomery was far from being a stay-at-home mom,” she revealed.
“I saw her as a kind of mother figure, someone who seemed different at home than when she went out to dinner with someone. So that was how I saw her. I also saw her side that was not necessarily as sweet and gentle as Samantha.”
“She was a businesswoman, serious, and definitely had that side. She also had, and I have said this before, a very sharp sense of humor, and so do I. I know I inherited that from her.”
