Sean Penn did not attend the 2026 Oscars ceremony and, therefore, could not receive his Best Supporting Actor statuette in person.

The 65-year-old actor won the third Oscar of his career for his role as Steven J. Lockjaw in One Battle After Another at the ceremony that took place last Sunday (15) in Los Angeles, California (USA).

Unfortunately, Penn was not in the country to take part in the event. According to The New York Times, the actor traveled to Europe in the days leading up to the Oscars and, according to two anonymous sources cited by the outlet, his plan was to spend some time in Ukraine instead of attending the show.

Neither of the two sources cited by The Times mentioned exactly why Penn went to Ukraine, especially considering that the country is still in an active war with Russia.

Kieran Culkin, who won the same category last year for his work in A Real Pain, accepted the award on the actor’s behalf. “Sean Penn couldn’t be here tonight, or chose not to be, so I will accept the award on his behalf,” Culkin said during the ceremony.

Penn previously won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in Mystic River in 2004 and Milk in 2009. He was also previously nominated for an Oscar for his performances in the films Dead Man Walking, Sweet and Lowdown and I Am Sam.
