Anderson Cooper lost his father when he was only 10 years old, in 1978. Ten years later, his brother committed suicide.

While speaking with Stephen Colbert about his podcast “All There Is,” which discusses topics such as grief and healing, the journalist became emotional.

“I didn’t allow myself to grieve as a child,” he said, explaining that instead, he “completely shut down.”

While opening up, Anderson Cooper said that listening to other people helped him allow himself to feel the pain of loss.

“By not allowing myself to feel the pain, I also didn’t allow myself to feel joy. True joy. Because you can’t have one without the other.”

He apologized for his trembling voice and said he has many reasons to feel joy. The journalist mentioned his two sons.

“One of them is backstage right now, watching. And that’s the greatest gift, and you kind of gave me that at the beginning,” he told Colbert.

Anderson Cooper is the father of Wyatt, 5, and Sebastian, 3, whom he shares with his ex-partner Benjamin Maisani.

The CNN journalist said that recording the podcast is both “refreshing and exhausting.”

“I’ve listened to about 6,000 voicemails from podcast listeners talking about their grief, and it’s the deepest experience of my life,” he admitted.
