“Will & Harper,” the new Netflix documentary, was released on September 27, and actor Will Ferrell explained why he and his friend Harper Steele insisted that the program reach the public before the elections in the U.S.

The documentary showcases a road trip taken by Ferrell and Steele, a close friend of the actor who underwent gender transition a few years ago. The duo visits various locations across the U.S. and encounters emotional, funny, and also very challenging situations.

In an interview with Variety, Ferrell shared the reason behind their insistence: “when we spoke to Netflix, we made it clear that we wanted to release this before the elections,” he said. “We wanted there to be enough time for people to see it and, who knows, start having important discussions in their living rooms.”

“We’ve heard people saying they can’t wait to watch this with friends and family who may not share the same viewpoint, and they’re excited to watch it all together,” Ferrell said about the documentary; “I hope it can slowly help to break down some of that.”
