Whoopi Goldberg sent a message of support to her friend, golfer Tiger Woods, after his most recent arrest for drunk driving and his decision to step away from the sport to seek treatment.

“Tiger is a friend of mine, and I wish him nothing but the best. I don’t like kicking a man when he’s down. I’ll leave that to other people,” Goldberg said on Wednesday’s (1st) episode of the talk show The View on ABC.

After his arrest on March 27, Woods appeared on his X profile on Tuesday (31st) to announce that he would step away from golf to focus on his health. “This is necessary so I can prioritize my well-being and work toward a lasting recovery,” he wrote.

“I am committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and I ask for privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself during this time.”

Later in the Wednesday episode segment, host Sunny Hostin addressed Woods’ arrest. “I’m not excusing the fact that he was driving under the influence, but I think we need to show someone who is a legend in the sport, who may have been under a lot of pressure as a child, some grace for the pain he’s living with and the fact that, as an athlete, he is now having to grapple with the possibility that he may have to give up the only thing he loves to do.”

Joy Behar then questioned why Woods couldn’t “get a driver,” to which Goldberg responded: “You don’t want to be that guy who is just: ‘Well, why is he always being driven around?’ You can’t win. Look, he’s getting what he needs. He’s going to get what he needs.”

Woods was arrested Friday afternoon after rolling his Range Rover in a two-car crash on Jupiter Island, Florida. Deputies from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office found two hydrocodone pills in Woods’ left pants pocket while on the scene, according to a sworn statement.

According to the probable cause affidavit, he told authorities he had taken his medication that morning because he has undergone seven back surgeries and more than 20 procedures on his leg.

The arrest came just one week after he returned to competitive golf, a year after rupturing his Achilles tendon. According to court documents reviewed by People magazine on March 31, Woods pleaded not guilty in Martin County Court.

This is not the first time Woods has been involved in a car accident. In 2021, he suffered serious injuries after a crash in Los Angeles that required surgery. In 2009, he was also involved in another accident near his home in Florida.
