A funeral in honor of the two was held at the Golden St. Michael’s Monastery.
“Defending the truth is one of the highest forms of love for others. In their effort to show the truth to the world, these journalists gave their lives,” wrote Father Viktor Zhyvchyk.
FreeDom, the broadcaster where Hubanova worked, stated that the reporter operated in the most dangerous areas, such as the Donetsk region, where the fighting remains most intense.
Despite all the risks of the profession, the broadcaster said she was dedicated to “showing the world the truth about how Russian forces are destroying her homeland, the Donetsk region.”

Olha Mykhaliuk, a colleague of the two journalists, attended the funeral carrying blue and yellow flowers, the same colors as the Ukrainian flag.
“Attacks against journalists are becoming more frequent. The enemy sees this as a kind of victory,” said Mykhaliuk.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack that killed Hubanova and Karmazin and left another reporter injured.
“These are not accidents or mistakes, but a deliberate strategy by Russia to silence all independent voices that report on Russian war crimes in Ukraine,” wrote Zelensky on X, formerly Twitter.
