Donald Trump has once again fueled speculation about the 2028 presidential race after making ambiguous comments about who could succeed him within the Republican Party.

Speaking to reporters in the White House garden, the American president joked by calling Vice President JD Vance a “little boy” while addressing how quickly Secret Service agents removed Vance from the scene during the shooting that occurred at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 25.

“I think [the Secret Service] did a great job two weeks ago. You know why? Because I’m here. But I will be the only one to find fault if I think there was a fault. They had great professional people, and they went out, and within seconds, I saw them grab JD by the shoulders and lift him up like he was a little boy.”

The president mocked the fact that the vice president had been “lifted out of his chair” by security agents while he himself remained at the scene for longer. “I said: ‘How come they didn’t lift me up that fast?’ JD was pulled out of the chair, that was the sight of the week,” Trump continued.

The remarks gained attention because they come amid growing discussions over who will lead the Republican movement after Trump’s current term ends. Although JD Vance is often cited as a favorite for 2028, other names have been gaining traction behind the scenes in the Republican Party, especially Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“Who likes JD Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio? Will it be JD? Will it be someone else? I don’t know. By the way, I believe it’s a dream team, but those are small details,” he indicated about his potential successor.

“That doesn’t mean you have my endorsement under any circumstances. But you know… I think it sounds like presidential candidate and vice-presidential candidate.”
