Donald Trump admitted that he would not pay the amount being charged for tickets to matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be held in North America.

In an interview with The New York Post, Trump was told that a ticket to watch the United States’ opening match against Paraguay next month is costing around $1,000. “I didn’t know that number. I would certainly like to be there, but I wouldn’t pay either, to be honest with you,” the American president told The Post by phone.

Trump’s statement came just hours after Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, publicly defended the ticket prices.

He even joked about the fact that some tickets for the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New York are being resold for up to $2 million, saying he would personally deliver “a hot dog and a Coca-Cola” to anyone who bought a ticket for that amount.

According to The Post, the average cost of a ticket for the final is nearly $13,000, compared with around $1,600 for the 2022 championship. The cheapest ticket for a match at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, costs $1,079 on Ticketmaster.

However, Trump expressed concern that lower-income Americans might not be able to attend. “If the people from Queens and Brooklyn and all the people who love Donald Trump can’t go, I would be disappointed. I would like to be able to have the people who voted for me going [to the event],” the president admitted to The Post.

Although he suggested that he could “take a look” at the matter, the president still celebrated the incredible “success” of ticket sales, with 5 million seats already reserved so far. “Breaking every record in the book. They’ve never had anything like it,” he said.
