The Netflix production recounts in detail the story of the Carnival Triumph cruise ship, which became known as the ‘poop ship’ after a power failure disabled all the ship’s toilets.
The incident occurred in 2013. The cruise suffered a fire in the engine room, causing a power outage and ruining the trip for more than 4,000 people.
The ship, which departed from Texas to Mexico, drifted for nearly a week in the Gulf of Mexico before being rescued.
The Netflix documentary features interviews with passengers and crew members who survived this infamous episode.
Cruise director Jen said the solution was to instruct passengers to urinate in the showers, while red biohazard bags were distributed for defecation.
Chaos took over the ship, which became overwhelmed with the foul odor of waste.
A passenger named Ashley said she took anti-diarrhea medicine so she wouldn’t have to use the bags during her bachelorette party.

During the towing of the ship, the Triumph drifted more than 100 nautical miles before finally reaching the port of Mobile, Alabama.
Carnival Cruise Line spent about 115 million dollars to clean, repair, and renovate the Triumph, which now operates under the name Carnival Sunrise.
Passengers received a full refund for their trip, plus $500 from the company, reimbursement for transportation expenses, and a free cruise as compensation.
After the documentary’s release, Carnival once again commented on the incident.
“An investigation revealed a design vulnerability in the ship, which has been corrected,” the company said.
“Since 2013, more than 53 million guests have enjoyed safe and memorable vacations with us, and we will continue to operate to these high standards,” they added.
