“I just thought it was a beautiful and spiritual story,” said Toni Collette on an episode of the podcast “Q With Tom Power.” The actress was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in M. Night Shyamalan’s film.
In the movie, Collette plays Lynn Sear, the mother of Cole, portrayed by Haley Joel Osment. The Mary and Max actress only realized it was a horror film when she walked past an improvised editing room on set.
The editors were working on the scene where Cole encounters the ghost of a dead girl named Kyra, played by Mischa Barton.
“She reaches out and grabs him. And the way it was shot, I thought: ‘Oh, s—, I think this is a horror movie,’” said Toni Collette. This would turn out to be the actress’s first horror film.

Shyamalan commented in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that this is the exact moment when Cole feels his life “turned into a horror film.”
Toni Collette stated that the horror films she has worked on are really “beautiful dramas” that take the story further. “‘Hereditary’ is just a devastating story about family, grief, and disconnection,” she noted.
Although the Little Miss Sunshine actress has said she is not a big fan of horror, she currently stars in Netflix’s new thriller-horror series “Wayward,” which premiered on September 25.
