Tom Holland revealed that his first dance rehearsals to portray Fred Astaire in an upcoming biopic sparked a mixture of excitement and apprehension.
During an interview on Good Morning America, the actor said that he had returned to the dance studio to prepare for the role of the legendary performer and that the training has been one of the greatest challenges of his career.
Known for playing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland said that he wants to honor Astaire’s legacy and intends to perform the dance sequences without using stunt or dance doubles. The actor’s plan is to film the musical numbers in long takes, following the style of Astaire’s own performances.
Despite the pressure, Holland has previous experience with dance. The actor began his career in musical theater and played the lead role in Billy Elliot the Musical when he was a child.
According to him, the new project represents an opportunity to reconnect with an area that was part of his journey. “That world that I loved so much, that I owe so much to,” Holland said.
The Fred Astaire biopic will be directed by Paul King, known for films such as Paddington and Wonka. The film does not yet have an announced release date.
