In a behind-the-scenes preview as a bonus for the film’s digital release, Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie shared more details about the scene in which Cruise clings to one airplane to jump onto another.
“Ah, that almost broke my back,” said Tom Cruise. In this fight scene, Hunt jumps from his plane to Gabriel’s, holding onto the wing with all his strength. The Hollywood star filmed all the scenes without stunt doubles, as usual.
“You’re talking about a lot of pain here,” added McQuarrie.
During the scene, Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, clings to a seatbelt and hangs upside down while the plane is flying at high speed.

“Now see this: the thing we don’t talk about, holding onto that seatbelt,” points out McQuarrie. “Oh God, that was brutal,” lamented Cruise.
“It forced Tom’s finger joints apart, so when we finished this sequence, his hands were completely swollen. My God, it was painful to watch,” explained the director.
In the sequence, Ethan is thrown against the airplane after Gabriel makes a spin. The actor made a grimace while reviewing the scene. “Ah, that was brutal. That hit, that was strong,” he said.
“Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” is already available on on-demand platforms. The film will be released in 4K Ultra HD, DVD, and Blu-ray on October 14.
