The official Instagram profile for „The Resurrection of the Christ“ shared a video on Tuesday (5) explaining that the sequel to „The Passion of the Christ“ will be divided into two parts.
The first part of „The Resurrection of the Christ“ will be released on March 26, 2027, on Good Friday, while the second part will hit theaters 40 days later, on Ascension Thursday, May 6 of the same year.
The sequel will depict the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Mel Gibson commented in 2016 in an interview with Stephen Colbert that it would be a unique event.
„It’s an extraordinary event… and supporting it with what is around it is really the story. It’s about clarifying what that means,” he said.
In 2022, he spoke about the timeline of „The Resurrection of the Christ“ and how it would be to write the scripts for the two films.

„One is well-structured, and the other is like an acid trip because you enter other realms,” he told Jenni Falconer. „You’re in hell. You see the fallen angels. It’s crazy,” he continued.
The film will feature Jim Caviezel returning as Jesus Christ and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. Maia Morgenstern, who played Jesus’ mother, and Francesco De Vito, who portrayed Peter, are also confirmed.
„The Resurrection of the Christ” is scheduled to begin filming in August. According to Variety, the scenes will be shot at Cinecittà Studios in Rome and in rural areas of southern Italy.
