Sylvester Stallone, one of the biggest names in the history of action cinema, turned 80 last Monday (6).
Over more than five decades, the actor, screenwriter and director brought to life characters that became pop culture icons and helped define the action genre in Hollywood.
Look back at some of the most memorable roles of his career:
1. Rocky (1976)
Rocky was the film that turned Stallone into a global star. In addition to playing boxer Rocky Balboa, he wrote the screenplay in just three days, inspired by the fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner.
The feature film received ten Oscar nominations, won Best Picture and earned Stallone nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

2. First Blood (1982)
Stallone played war veteran John Rambo, a former Vietnam combatant who faces prejudice and psychological trauma upon returning to the United States. The character became one of the greatest icons of action cinema and launched a five-film franchise.
3. Judge Dredd (1995)
Based on the British comics 2000 AD, the film features Stallone as Judge Joseph Dredd, responsible for arresting, judging and executing criminals in a dystopian society.
Despite its mixed reception, the feature helped consolidate the actor’s image as one of the leading action stars of the 1990s.

4. The Expendables (2010)
Stallone brought together some of the biggest names in action cinema, including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. In addition to starring in the film as Barney Ross, he also wrote and directed the production, which gave rise to a successful franchise.
5. Creed (2015)
Decades after the success of Rocky, Stallone returned to play Rocky Balboa, now as the mentor of Adonis, son of Apollo Creed. His performance was widely praised and earned him the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, as well as an Oscar nomination in the same category.
