At a press conference, the American actress said she was blacklisted from Hollywood after calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Susan Sarandon said during a press conference held in Barcelona, Spain, that she was blacklisted from Hollywood after calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The American actress spoke with journalists ahead of the 40th edition of the Goya Awards and discussed the difficulties she faces in finding work in the United States.

Sarandon, 79, was dropped by her agents in 2023 after taking part in a pro-Palestine rally, and in recent years has been working on independent films produced in Europe.

According to a report by Entertainment Weekly, the actress said she cannot even get television roles; “I was fired by my agency specifically for participating in marches and speaking out about Gaza, for calling for a ceasefire, and it has become impossible even to appear on television,” she said.

According to the “Thelma & Louise” actress, she has only been able to find work in Europe: “I finally found agents in England and Italy, and I’ve been working there,” she said. “I just made a film in Italy and performed in a play at the Old Vic for a few months.”

“So right now, I’m specializing in small films, with directors who have never directed before, independent films, and films set in Europe or Italy. That’s the main reason why I haven’t been working as much,” she explained.

Sarandon also praised the Spanish government for declaring its objection to Israel in Gaza and said the situation in the U.S. is completely different.

“When you turn on the TV and see the strength of Spain and the moral clarity you have on these issues, you feel less alone and feel that there is hope because of you. You simply don’t see that on television in the United States,” Sarandon said.

The most recent films from major U.S. studios featuring Sarandon were projects that began before November 2023; “The Six Triple Eight” and “Nonnas”, both from Netflix.
