A strange Chilean advertising campaign from over 20 years ago, featuring iconic actors from the Star Wars franchise, is going viral on social media.

The humorous advertising campaign for Cerveza Cristal beer was inserted into the film to avoid interrupting for a commercial break, according to Windy, the user on X (Twitter) who shared the clip on the platform, where it has already received over 32 million views.

“Around 2003 in Chile, when the original Star Wars trilogy began airing on television there, they did something funny to avoid interrupting the commercial breaks. They literally stitched the commercials into the films themselves. Here’s one of them, with English dubbing added.”

The campaign shows characters from the beloved franchise grabbing a cold beer in a truly unusual moment. Suddenly, Obi-Wan Kenobi hands Luke Skywalker a Cerveza Cristal instead of his father’s lightsaber.

And it wasn’t just the first Star Wars film that received the shocking edit. Another clip shows Emperor Palpatine grabbing a beer before the climactic showdown in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

Another moment comes when Obi-Wan Kenobi is inside the Death Star. Instead of showing him shutting off the ship’s tractor beam, he is shown grabbing a cold bottle of Cerveza Cristal beer.

Most impressively, according to a report from The Guardian from 20 years ago, the agency behind the campaign, OMD Santiago, won the most prestigious prize at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity that year.
