During an interview at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin on Friday (13), Steven Spielberg commented on the possibility of life beyond Earth. The director of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” shared details about his theory.

“I have a very strong suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now,” the filmmaker revealed while speaking about his new science fiction film “Disclosure Day,” which premieres in June 2026.

Former U.S. president Barack Obama has also stated that aliens exist. When Steven Spielberg heard this, he was excited. “My God, this is great for Disclosure Day,” he celebrated.

The director of “War of the Worlds” clarified his opinion by pushing back against conspiracy theorists. “Statistically, the universe is so vast that the chances are good that there is life out there.”

“He walked it back to say that he believes there is life in the cosmos, which of course is something everyone should believe,” Spielberg added. “No one should really think that we are the only intelligent civilization in the entire universe,” he said.

“The big question is: are we alone right now? And have we been alone for the past 80 years? Have we been alone for the past thousands of years?” he asked.

Steven Spielberg, who has directed several films about aliens, said in a behind-the-scenes video for “Disclosure Day” that he has always been fascinated by “things that cannot be explained.”

“When I was just a child, I remember developing a real curiosity about the night sky and what is happening up there — and not just the possibility, but the certainty that life exists beyond this planet,” he said.

“Disclosure Day” is his first UFO-themed film since “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” The sci-fi feature stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo and arrives in theaters on June 12.
