George Lucas, creator of “Star Wars,” explained why the character Yoda speaks differently from the other characters in the franchise.
According to Variety, George Lucas revealed during the 2025 TCM Classic Film Festival the real reason why the character Yoda in “Star Wars” speaks in such a peculiar way.
Lucas mentioned that he needed a way to make people really listen to the character’s philosophical thoughts, “especially 12-year-old kids.”
“Because if he spoke normal English, people wouldn’t pay as much attention. But if he had an accent, or if it was really hard to understand what he said, people would focus more on his words,” explained the creator of the franchise.
Yoda made his first appearance in the “Star Wars” universe in the 1980 film “The Empire Strikes Back,” portrayed by Frank Oz.
The character appears to begin Luke Skywalker’s Jedi training, played by Mark Hamill. He introduces the fundamentals of the Force while teaching by reversing the order of his sentences, which draws the audience’s attention.
In the first moments, he seems like a cute and clumsy creature, but later he reveals himself to be more serious, like a great master he once was.
In the other films of the franchise, Yoda continues speaking in reversed sentences, but without seeming as playful.
