In a conversation with Ethan Hawke for Interview Magazine, the “Carrie” actress said that her childhood nickname, Sissy Spacek, eventually became her stage name.

Hawke asked the actress whether the nickname came from “Sister.” Sissy Spacek, who is from Texas just like Ethan Hawke, confirmed that it was given to her by her older brothers, Robbie and Ed Jr.

“My real name is Mary Elizabeth, and when I started school in first grade, they asked, ‘Is it Mary or Elizabeth?’ At that moment, I knew I would have to fight for my name,” she said.

“That’s a common nickname in the South for girls. In fact, when I was working on ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ and they called out ‘Sissy’ on set, chaos erupted. All the little girls had the nickname Sissy,” she continued.

Sissy Spacek spoke about her cousin, Rip Torn, and the stories he told her when he visited her in her hometown, Quitaman, Texas.

“He took after the men on my father’s side of the family. He would pass through here and go fishing, so acting seemed like a possibility because I heard the family stories about him going to New York,” she said.

“But I was a musician, that was my path. I never wanted to embarrass Rip by acting, so I waited until I kind of stumbled into it,” she noted. Sissy Spacek said she learned to act through her sensory memory.

“What acting is — or any art — is exploring the human condition. So every emotion you feel, you can use. I had very little training, except what life taught me.”

After starring alongside Martin Sheen, Mel Gibson, and Sam Shepard, Sissy is now acting with Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson in “Die My Love.”
