Sharon Stone became emotional in a recent interview while talking about the troubled relationship she had always had with her mother, who died last year.

During an appearance on the podcast “All There Is With Anderson Cooper”, the actress spoke openly about the complex relationship between the two and reflected on the death of her mother Dorothy in July 2025, at the age of 91.

Stone, 68, could not hold back tears as she explained how her mother’s extremely difficult childhood shaped their relationship and reflected on the painful decision to let her go.

“My mother often behaved as if she didn’t like me at all”, the actress told the host. “And it took a lot of therapy, including trauma therapy, for me to understand that this was a reflection of the aversion she felt toward herself”, she revealed, explaining that at the age of 9 her mother was taken from her parents because of mistreatment and placed to work as a domestic servant for another family.

According to Stone, her mother married while pregnant, at just 16 years old, and although her parents had a loving and happy relationship, her mother never overcame her traumatic childhood; for the actress, it was difficult for a long time to understand Dorothy’s resentment, and she explained how the dynamic between them evolved in the period leading up to her mother’s death.

“She was terrified of the idea of dying because she feared her parents would be there”, Stone said. “So I had to lie to her and tell her that her father was in prison and her mother was in a psychiatric hospital. And that they wouldn’t be there”.

The actress revealed that Dorothy resisted strongly and fought as much as she could not to die; “My mother was resisting with all her strength. And I finally realized: ‘I need to let her go. I need to free my mother'”, she said emotionally.

For Stone, as a daughter, she was still hoping to hear from her mother words she had never heard, but she had to come to terms with it; “I wanted her to say: ‘I’m proud of you. I love you. I’m sorry. You matter to me’, and I wasn’t going to hear that”, she admitted, in tears.

“And I had to come to terms with the fact that my mother wasn’t going to do that. So that she could die in peace, I had to let her go”.
