Ellen DeGeneres went from being one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed hosts to a forgotten figure after being hit by a series of scandals.

The host, who led the Ellen show for nearly 20 years, announced the end of the program in 2023 after a series of controversies involving the bizarre way she treated her staff behind the scenes.
After the results of the 2024 presidential elections, in which Donald Trump was re-elected president of the United States, Ellen and her wife Portia de Rossi decided to say goodbye to the U.S. and announced their permanent move to the United Kingdom.
“We arrived here the day before the election and woke up to several messages from friends with crying emojis, and I thought: ‘He did it.’ And we said: ‘We’re staying here,’” Ellen said in a recent conversation with host Richard Bacon.
Ellen moved with her wife to a farm and now shares snapshots of her rural life on social media, including videos showing their animals. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” she said.
“We’re simply not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages, the towns, and the architecture — everything you see is charming, and it’s simply a simpler way of life. It’s clean. Everything here is just better — the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”
“We moved here in November, which wasn’t the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love this place. Portia brought her horses here, I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks,” she joked, before explaining that the sheep had to be sold because they kept trying to escape.
Ellen addressed the accusations from her former employees in her Netflix comedy special last year. She admitted that she is “very direct,” but that the media simply portrayed her as a “mean” person.
“How do you deal with that without seeming like a victim, or ‘poor me’ or complaining? But I wanted to address the subject. It’s as simple as: I’m a direct person and very direct, and I think sometimes that means that… I’m mean?” the host asked.
She then reflected that being portrayed as mean “may be the worst thing you can say about a woman.” “How dare we have any kind of humor, otherwise you can’t be anything other than nice, sweet, kind, submissive, and compliant.”
“I don’t think I can say anything that will free me from this [reputation] or dispel it, and that hurts me. I hate it. I hate that people think I’m like that because I know who I am, and I know I’m an empathetic and compassionate person,” she lamented.
Ellen said the whole situation was “certainly an unpleasant way to end” her talk show and that she misses it “a lot,” but when asked if she would host a similar show in the U.K., she said she believes the format would no longer work.
“I mean, I wish it would, because I’d do the same thing here. I’d love to do it again, but I feel like people are watching on their phones, or not paying as much attention to television, because we’re so saturated with information and entertainment.”
She stated that she doesn’t know exactly what she will do in the future, but said she is aware that she should choose her next step “very carefully.” “I just don’t know what that is yet. I want to have fun, I want to do something. I like my chickens, but I’m a little bored,” she joked.
