The second season of the series The Pitt will address the immediate consequences of Trump’s cuts to the Medicaid program.

The series, which shows the chaotic routine of healthcare professionals in U.S. emergency rooms, will practically show the results of the controversial changes to Medicaid introduced by President Trump in his “big and beautiful bill.”

Medicaid is a U.S. government benefit that provides health insurance to low-income citizens in the U.S. The program was created by former President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965.

In a conversation with Variety magazine, Noah Wyle, star and producer of the series, and executive producers John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill, talked about how the series will address the effects of these cuts in emergency rooms.

“You don’t need to take a political stance to discuss what the real impact [of the changes to Medicaid] will be,” Wells said in the interview.

“They will have immediate and concrete consequences in emergency rooms, and no one disputes that. It’s a bipartisan agreement. Very Republican senators from Missouri, like Josh Hawley, agree that this will be a problem.”

Trump signed the bill in question on July 4th. Among other things, the legislation includes $930 billion in cuts to Medicaid and other cuts to food assistance, clean energy programs, and student loans.

“When people have fewer government resources to help them with their healthcare, they will have less access to health, and that means they will end up in the only place where they can get free care, which is the emergency room,” Gemmill told the outlet.

“So, the emergency room will become increasingly busy and turn into a safety net, and it’s already broken, so the system is headed toward a tipping point.”

“We have a certain safety net by being just a realistic drama trying to portray what a hospital looks like. You are not making value judgments. You are just painting a picture,” added Wyle.

“You see what you want to see and draw your own conclusions. If it looks like the system is unsustainable, unfair, and biased in favor of one population to the detriment of another, maybe it really is.”

Wells also told Variety that he hopes medical professionals “see themselves in The Pitt, but question and rectify, in particular, their own unconscious biases about patients from marginalized groups.”

The Pitt was renewed for a second season in February, with a premiere scheduled for January 2026. According to Warner Bros. Television, the series became the most-watched title on HBO Max globally.
