Known for his role as Dwight Schrute in “The Office“, the 59-year-old Wilson currently hosts the podcast “Soul Boom“, where he frequently discusses topics related to spirituality.
Death doulas are professionals who provide emotional, physical, and spiritual support to people in terminal stages and their families, offering information, guidance, and helping everyone become fully aware of the entire process.
Wilson explained that, to him, death doulas are not that different from doulas who offer support during pregnancy and childbirth.
“It’s a different kind of birth, right?” the actor asked. “It’s a birth into the next stage of our existence, because I fully believe in the continuation and journey of the human soul beyond the material realm. And most religions in the world agree.”
For Wilson, the role of a doula can be essential for a fearless passage, since death can be truly frightening.
“To be there to guide someone with beauty, respect, and dignity from this life to the next, to help the family in the transition, to understand what kind of legacy you want to leave, how you want to celebrate what is a painful transition that is so often overlooked in Western society,” he said.
When Meyers heard Wilson talking about his desire to quit acting to work as a death doula, he commented that it would be a shame not to see him as an actor anymore and made a suggestion: “Well, I’d like you to keep doing both,” he said. “I don’t want you to stop one just to do the other, but I think you’d be really good at both.”
“Well, thank you very much,” Wilson replied.
