Correspondent Jason Carroll was briefly detained live by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department while covering protests against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“I’m being detained,” says the CNN correspondent moments after losing contact with the studio anchors. Jason Carroll can be seen in the video with his hands behind his back.
“We’ll let him go. You cannot come back. If you come back, you will be arrested,” says one of the officers who escorted him out of the police perimeter.
“I was called over, and the officer told me to put my hands behind my back. I asked, ‘Am I under arrest?’ and he replied, ‘You’re being detained,’” explained the correspondent, who identified himself as a CNN reporter.
The journalist said he was not handcuffed but was informed by the officers that he could not be there.
“We are pleased that the situation was quickly resolved once the team presented their CNN credentials,” the network said in response.
The correspondent stated that situations like this are part of the profession.
“I’ve covered countless protests, and usually the police understand that the press is just there to do their job.”
The protests in Los Angeles started in response to actions by ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Protesters were denouncing abusive approaches and mass deportations.
