A video of meteorologist Jim Cantore getting spooked after hearing “snow thunder” while presenting the weather live in Kansas City is going viral on social media.

The reporter was outdoors presenting the weather for Kansas City on The Weather Channel when he heard a “snow thunder” starting nearby.

According to Met Office, the UK’s meteorological service, this happens “when storms form in winter conditions, and they can sometimes result in heavy snow showers,” so lightning in these conditions is often called “snow thunder.”

Despite being frightened by the closeness of the lightning, Cantore couldn’t hide his excitement about the situation. “Was that another one? No, it wasn’t, it was the flash. Yes, it was! You saw it! You saw it! I told you! We just had it again,” he shouted in the video.

“Guys, that’s number seven, that’s number seven. Snow thunder here in Kansas City, we just had some lightning. So, this is the energy rising again from the south, and what’s really interesting is that we can’t even see the city now, it’s all just white.”

“So visibility has dropped, and the intensity of the snow has increased. Think of it like rain, often when you have a storm there are heavier rain showers, and that’s exactly what we’re experiencing,” continued Cantore.

“The same thing is happening in a storm, it’s happening above the cold air, so everything is frozen, it’s all frozen. So, this is what we’re experiencing here in Kansas City. Wow!” he concluded.
