Although they played a couple in the 1982 film, the actor who portrayed the biker Michael Carrington knew he wouldn’t fall for Pfeiffer’s charms as soon as he stepped onto the set.
“We didn’t have the kind of relationship that John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John had [in the original film],” explained the 65-year-old actor in a conversation with Fox News Digital.
“They […] were completely in love. Michelle and I just had to pretend we were in love. And we had both [just] gotten married. So there was no question that any [boundary] would be crossed in that sense.”
Although their relationship was strictly platonic, Caulfield admitted that they bonded over the possibility of achieving international fame, just as Travolta and Newton-John had in 1978.
“I think we were both a little apprehensive about the imminent stardom. Sometimes we talked about how to deal with it, because it’s very real to suddenly become world-famous. It means that, like everything in life, there’s a price to pay,” he explained.
Grease 2 wasn’t as successful as the original film, and while Caulfield’s career stalled, Pfeiffer rose to stardom after starring in Scarface (1983) alongside Al Pacino.
Caulfield admitted it wasn’t easy to see Pfeiffer reach fame while he struggled to find his way in Hollywood. “When the movie… didn’t take off, I sank with the ship. But she rose again like a fabulous phoenix.”
“I hoped to be embraced by the moviegoing public. I aspired to represent a certain mantle of elegance that movie stardom confers… There is something special about achieving that kind of tremendous success,” added Caulfield.
Still, he stressed that he holds no resentment toward Pfeiffer. “I hope to work with her again someday. She is a wonderfully generous actress,” the actor concluded.
