In a recent interview, the actor and comedian spoke openly about the tragic death of his daughter Katherine at the age of 42.
Martin Short spoke for the first time about the tragedy he faced earlier this year when his daughter Katherine, 42, died by suicide.
The 76-year-old actor and comedian was candid in discussing his daughter’s battle with mental health issues and compared the loss to the death of his wife, Nancy Doman, in 2010 from cancer.
“Mental health and cancer, like my wife’s, are both illnesses, and sometimes illnesses are terminal,” Short said during his appearance on CBS News Sunday Morning, on May 10.

“And my daughter struggled for a long time with serious mental health issues, borderline personality disorder, among other things, and she did the best she could until she couldn’t anymore,” he explained.
Katherine was one of the three children Short and his wife adopted. She was a licensed clinical social worker and held a master’s degree from the University of Southern California.
Short’s life and career, including accounts of his family tragedies, will be featured in the documentary “Marty, Life Is Short”, scheduled to premiere on May 12, 2026, on Netflix.
