Martha Stewart expressed her dissatisfaction with the Netflix documentary titled “Martha,” criticizing filmmaker R.J. Cutler for not using her archive properly, despite being granted full access.

In an interview with New York Post, the TV host revealed that she was particularly bothered by the final scenes that portray her as a lonely elderly woman, stating that she requested their removal, but Cutler refused. Stewart also opposed the documentary’s focus on her prison experience in 2004.

“The trial and the actual imprisonment lasted less than two years in an 83-year life. To be honest, I considered it a vacation.”

The also entrepreneur and former billionaire disapproved of the film’s soundtrack: “a terrible classical score that has nothing to do with me,” she said. Stewart requested that rap music be played, considering it essential to the narrative, but her requests were ignored.

Despite the criticism, she praised the first half of the documentary, which addresses lesser-known aspects of her life and highlights her authenticity.

“I love the first half of the documentary. It covers things that many people know nothing about, which is what I like. That’s what I wanted the documentary to be. It shouldn’t be me bragging about inner strength and any of that nonsense. It should be about showing that you can go through life and still be yourself.”

In response to Stewart’s criticism, Cutler defended the documentary as a portrayal of a complex and brilliant person and expressed pride in being chosen to make the film. He emphasized that the work should not be viewed as a simple biography, but rather as a cinematic narrative exploring the life of a fascinating figure.

The documentary “Martha” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
