Pamela Warner, mother and manager of the late Malcolm-Jamal Warner, reportedly screamed so loudly that everyone in her neighborhood ran out to her.

Pamela attended her first interview after losing her son. She went to Good Morning America and spoke to Robin Roberts about the moment she learned she had lost him.

Malcolm-Jamal died from an accidental drowning off the coast of Costa Rica on July 20. He was 54 years old.

“Yes, they came. It came from the depths of my soul,” Pamela commented about her scream of anguish. “And what came out was huge. It was an indescribable pain that resonated throughout my entire body,” she recounted.

She said that Malcolm was visiting his wife and daughter in Costa Rica, who had been in the country for three weeks as part of an immersion program. “It was the last week for husbands to go. That was the fun part,” she explained.

Pamela explained that her son was in the water with another man, contrary to reports saying he was with his daughter in the water.

“They were in the water, maybe up to the chest. Even then, maybe up to the waist. There was a rip current,” she said. Malcolm and the other man were caught by the current, but the other man was a more experienced swimmer than her son.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death shook his colleagues and former castmates, who paid tribute to the actor, who was also remembered by Phylicia Rashad while presenting the “In Memoriam” segment at the 2025 Emmy Awards.
