Dalton Swanger, an officer with the Knox County Sheriff’s Department, is in critical condition in a hospital after being beaten by a suspect he was trying to arrest.

According to the website Law and Crime, Swanger was attacked by Christopher Hensley in a wooded area behind a house. The video shows several officers shouting toward the woods.

The officer entered alone with his weapon drawn and moments later was lying on his side. Reports say he was hit on the head with a stone or a brick.

“The entire studio fell silent as we watched what happened next,” wrote the show host Tom Rizzo on Facebook.

Swanger was dragged away by his colleagues who tried to stop the bleeding, but his condition quickly became severe. The officer was taken to the hospital unconscious, where he remains in intensive care.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department reported that Swanger showed slight signs of recovery and is now able to move all four limbs, according to the report.

Christopher Hensley was arrested and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault on a first responder, possession of a firearm, and manufacturing, delivery, sale, or possession of a controlled substance.

A GoFundMe campaign was created to support the officer. Over $65,000 has been raised.
