Kate Jackson, remembered for her role as Sabrina Duncan in Charlie’s Angels, revealed that she was never properly credited for coming up with the show’s name.
The information was shared by Jackson during an event celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary. On the occasion, she said she met with producer Aaron Spelling to hear his idea for the series, which was still in its early stages.
However, she was not a fan of what had been planned up to that point. “I was looking down while [he] told me the story of The Alley Cats, thinking: ‘This is the worst idea I’ve ever heard in my life. What’s going to happen when I look up? Will my upper lip stick to my teeth, or will I be smiling?'”
Jackson tried to hold back, and that’s when the producer asked if she had any ideas of her own. She explained that her idea came from a poster Spelling had in his office.
The poster showed three angels, so Jackson suggested that the main characters of the series should be called “angels.” Despite this, she was never paid or credited for her idea.
“I had never [heard] the words ‘intellectual property,’ and I thought that to have the rights to something, you actually had to have the money to produce it,” Jackson explained at the recent event.
“But I’m still proud to have been part of it. I’m proud to have had an idea that kind of set the world on fire for a while. It was fun.”
