Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary, is being heavily criticized by internet users after claiming that fuel prices fell during the Trump administration, when in fact they rose.

Oil prices surged in early March after the United States, in a joint operation with Israel, attacked Iran, triggering a war in the Middle East that is now heading into its seventh week.

The increase is due to Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz, a passage that connects the Persian Gulf to the rest of the ocean and through which about 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.

But according to Leavitt, that is not the case. “Thank God we have a president and an administration that believes in American energy dominance to lower prices at the pump. Look at how gas prices decreased over the past year since this president was in office,” she said at a recent press conference.

In response, many accused Leavitt of “lying” to people’s faces. “She can’t be serious,” wrote one user on X. “Karoline Leavitt thinks you’re stupid and can’t read gas price numbers when you go to pay,” another jabbed.

“This is such a ridiculous lie, it’s an insult to the American people. Gas prices increased 30% last year, but Trump’s press secretary has the audacity to lie to you and claim they went down. The absolute lack of shame is appalling,” added Congressman Shri Thanedar.
