Kaley Cuoco told People magazine that John Ritter, her co-star from “8 Simple Rules,” became like a father to her after their first table read. Ritter passed away in 2003 at the age of 54.

The interview took place during the Evening from the Heart L.A. Gala hosted by the John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health.

“I was 16 when we had our first table read, and I played the ‘bold’ sister. I remember wearing a very revealing dress to the reading,” Cuoco recalled.

That’s when Ritter entered the room without saying a word and placed his coat over her.

“‘You’re never dressing like that again, young lady,’ he said. That was the first thing he ever said to me, and he instantly became my TV dad,” said Kaley.

“8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter” also starred Katey Sagal, Amy Davidson, and Martin Spanjers. Kaley Cuoco played Bridget, the eldest daughter of Ritter and Sagal’s characters.

The series aired from 2002 to 2005. John Ritter died of a heart condition called aortic dissection. He collapsed on set during a rehearsal for an episode of the second season.

In a 2018 interview, Kaley Cuoco spoke about the last time she saw the actor.

“He sat on the couch and said, ‘I love you,’ and I said, ‘I love you too, you goof.’ And he said, ‘No, I want you to know, I love you.’ And I said, ‘I love you too,’ and then he said, ‘That’s it,’ and gave me a hug.”
