Chastain, 48, attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Juilliard School before starting her professional career in the early 2000s. In 2024, Juilliard awarded her an honorary doctorate for her “outstanding contributions” to the theater and film industries.

Chastain took to her Instagram to celebrate her doctorate; “Dr. Chastain sounds pretty good,” she wrote at the time.

In the same year, during a speech at the 38th Annual American Cinematheque Awards, the actress spoke about being the first woman in her family to earn a college degree.

“I was the first in my family not to get pregnant as a teenager, the first to finish high school, and the first to attend college,” Chastain said.
