After Donald Trump criticized the Supreme Pontiff over the weekend, it was JD Vance’s turn to comment on Pope Leo XIV’s actions in an interview on Fox News with Brett Baier on Monday (13).
“I certainly think that, in some cases, it would be better if the Vatican stuck to issues of morality,” said JD Vance. The U.S. vice president converted to Catholicism in 2019 at the age of 35.
“Let them stick to what is happening in the Catholic Church and let the U.S. president handle American public policy. But when they are in conflict, they are in conflict,” he advised.
Tensions between the Pope and the Trump administration began on Sunday (12) after President Trump shared a lengthy rant against Leo XIV following the pontiff’s criticism of the war in Iran.
“I don’t want a pope who thinks it’s okay for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. I don’t want a pope who thinks it’s terrible that America attacked Venezuela, a country that was sending large amounts of drugs to the U.S.,” wrote Donald Trump.

The Pope responded to the president’s remarks on Monday (13), before JD Vance’s comments. “I am sorry to hear that, but I will continue with what I believe to be the mission of the Church in today’s world,” he said.
“Many people are suffering in the world today. Many innocent people are being killed. And I think someone needs to stand up and say that there is a better way,” the Pope continued.
Commenting on the AI-generated image showing Trump as Jesus healing someone, JD Vance said it was just “a joke” by the president.
