In an interview with People magazine, the former talk show host denied that caring for his wife after her diagnosis is a “job.”
“I’ve been very lucky in my life. My wife is battling dementia and all that, but it’s not cancer. It’s not a tumor, so I enjoy taking care of her,” said Jay Leno.
He has been married to Mavis since the 1980s.
“It’s not work, because people come up to me and say they’re sorry. I understand the compassion, because I know many people are going through this, but it’s okay,” he reassured.
The host added that he enjoys his wife’s company and has fun with her.

“There are going to be some tough years. But the first 46 were really great. And that’s okay. It’s not terrible. I’m not the type to complain. I’m just lucky to be able to take care of her,” said Jay Leno.
He also clarified that he’s in a better situation than most people who need to care for someone with dementia.
“I go home every day. I went to Puerto Rico for a day, the plane waited, and I came right back. That’s what I do. I try to be home every night. That’s pretty much what I do,” he concluded.
