Lionsgate has released the first image from “The Resurrection of the Christ”, the highly anticipated sequel to the biblical drama directed by Mel Gibson in 2004.

To mark the end of filming for “The Resurrection of the Christ”, directed by Mel Gibson, Lionsgate shared the first image from the sequel to “The Passion of the Christ”.

“I am deeply grateful to my incredibly talented cast and crew for pouring their hearts into this production. Together, we created something powerful,” Gibson said in a press release.

In the photo shared on social media, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen appears as Jesus, replacing Jim Caviezel, the star of the first film. The replacement happened because Caviezel, now 57 years old, would need to be digitally de-aged for the movie, which takes place three days after Christ’s crucifixion on Good Friday.

In addition to Ohtonen, Mariela Garriga, Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio and Rupert Everett are also part of the cast of the production, which will be released in two parts; the first on May 6, 2027, and the second one year later, on May 25, 2028.

Starring Caviezel and Monica Bellucci, alongside a cast of major names, “The Passion of the Christ”, directed by Gibson, broke records upon its release 21 years ago, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film worldwide in 2004.
