The 48-year-old Australian actress filmed a scene of a magic trick performed in a water tank, but she admitted that everything almost went wrong during the filming. While these tricks are typically performed by professionals, Fisher said she wanted to do it herself.
“I don’t see myself as particularly brave. If something terrifies me, I’ll do it,” she told Cosmopolitan in 2013, admitting that even the director, Louis Leterrier, was impressed by her courage.
“The director told me, ‘Wow. I’ve worked with so many actors on big action films, and you’re the only one who did all of your own action scenes.’ I said, ‘I didn’t know I had a choice. I thought you just had to go on. It’s the Australian way.'”
In the scene, Fisher’s character appears completely desperate as she is chained by her feet and hands inside a water tank. But it seems that Fisher didn’t even need to act at that moment, because she was actually fearing for her life.
The actress shared that her chains got really stuck during the filming. To try to escape, she started banging on the tank’s walls to alert the crew, but everyone thought she was acting.
“They had a guy who was outside the cameras, but he was very far away with an oxygen tank… when I realized I couldn’t get up and waved to him, I realized I was out of air.”
In another interview, she said that her fear at that moment made things worse. “The adrenaline of being chained underwater meant I had less oxygen in my lungs, I ran out of air faster, and I panicked a bit more,” Fisher explained.
“I stayed underwater for up to three minutes – that’s what Louis, the director, told me he saw when he was in the editing room. It was scary, but I actually really enjoyed it.”
