The 67-year-old actor gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly and spoke about the “Bensler” couple, which is much loved by fans, even though it hasn’t yet become “canon.”
“I don’t know, it’s just the show. I don’t know what’s going on. But I’ve been saying for a while that they should just go into a room,” Ice-T joked during the chat.
The two launched Law & Order: SVU together in 1999, and their characters, Captain Olivia Benson (Hargitay) and Detective Elliot Stabler (Meloni), had incredible chemistry from their very first moments on screen.
Hargitay left the series in 2011, but even after twelve seasons and many more years acting together in other series, the two never shared an on-screen kiss.
Although Ice-T is rooting for Bensler fans to finally get what they’ve wanted for decades, he also took the opportunity to give a dose of reality.

She’s not a writer, but she has a lot of power, so she kind of steers the ship,” the actor explained.
He suggested that if Mariska really wanted Bensler to happen, she could make it happen, but “I don’t know if Dick Wolf [the producer] wants them together. Maybe he just wants to keep dangling that bait. Keep the seasons going,” Ice-T added.
Recently, Meloni spoke about a cut kiss scene that was supposed to happen between the two in the series. “We were trying something. I don’t think it worked. But I’m not going to say why it didn’t work, because everyone has their own opinion,” he explained vaguely.
Meanwhile, Hargitay gave an interview in June and said she believes Benson and Stabler are “soulmates.” “Chris has had a profound impact on my life, on my craft,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
“I think we’ve had a big impact on each other, so Olivia and Elliot are [soulmates]. But let’s see where the story takes us. Maybe in the very last episode… I think that’s when they should end up together.”
