A decades-old question has just been answered. Chris Columbus, director of Home Alone, recently revealed what Kevin’s parents do for a living.

He appeared on the podcast Awards Chatter by The Hollywood Reporter and finally clarified a question fans of the movie had been asking for years: What do Kevin’s parents do for work?

After all, to own a house that size in Chicago and afford all those expensive family trips, they must be making pretty good money.

During the conversation, Columbus explained that he and writer-producer John Hughes “had a discussion about it” while making the movie and “decided what their jobs would be.”

According to him, Kevin’s mother, Kate McCallister, played by Catherine O’Hara, was a highly successful fashion designer. However, the father, Peter McCallister, played by John Heard, had a less defined profession.

Columbus admitted he couldn’t recall Peter’s exact job but made an interesting assumption. “The father could have, based on John Hughes’ own experiences, worked in advertising,” he said.

He then debunked a theory that the McCallisters were involved in organized crime. “Organized crime? No. Even though there was a lot of organized crime in Chicago at the time.”
