Mamie Van Doren, who, like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield, was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars in the 1950s, has recalled in detail a passionate encounter she had with Che Guevara in 1961.

In an excerpt from “You Thought I Was Dead”, Van Doren recounts how she met Guevara while filming “An American in Buenos Aires” in the Argentine capital and the impact the revolutionary leader made on her when they first met.

According to the actress, during a lavish party held after a long day of filming, her co-star Jean-Pierre Aumont introduced her to “Generalissimo Ernesto Che Guevara,” who, she recalled, had a scruffy mustache and far-from-perfect hair.

Even so, Van Doren remembers that the two spent a great deal of time talking, and at the end of the evening, Guevara offered to take her back to her hotel, which she accepted. In excerpts published by Entertainment Weekly, the actress describes how the encounter turned into an unusual night of romance.

“There are love scenes, and then there are love scenes. Almost always, they are seasoned with the promise of the unexpected. An armed guard at the door of the room was about as unexpected as it could get,” Van Doren wrote.

The 95-year-old actress says the two shared a strong connection and that Guevara, who was preparing to leave for a mission in the Congo, asked her to meet him again. However, she never saw him again.

According to Van Doren, although she was in love, other responsibilities brought her back to reality, including caring for her young son and maintaining her already established Hollywood career.
