Tilly Norwood, an actress generated by artificial intelligence, will make her film debut as the lead in Misaligned, a feature film produced by British studio Particle6.
The announcement marks the first time the virtual character will lead a film and reignites the debate over the use of AI in the entertainment industry.
Described as a coming-of-age dramedy, the film follows Tilly, an artificial intelligence that lives in a digital universe called the “Tillyverse.”
The story shows the character developing ambitions and emotions of her own after being influenced by a rebellious AI, exploring themes such as identity, fame and the boundaries between human creativity and technology.
Tilly Norwood was introduced to the public in 2025 and quickly sparked controversy in Hollywood. Industry professionals criticized the project over concerns that virtual actors trained on human works could replace real performers without authorization or compensation.
The initiative was also criticized by SAG-AFTRA. “To be clear, Tilly Norwood is not an actress. She is a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation,” the organization argued in a statement.
In response to the criticism, Particle6 founder Eline van der Velden said that Misaligned will be a hybrid production, combining artificial intelligence tools with the work of screenwriters, directors, editors and other human professionals.
According to her, the goal is to demonstrate that AI can expand the possibilities of cinematic storytelling rather than replace human creativity. “Our work this year proved something we had suspected all along. AI can support the production of premium narrative films, but only with substantial amounts of human craftsmanship, skill, judgment and time.”
