In a recent interview, Helen Mirren spoke about the rise of cosmetic procedures among younger people and gave a simple yet very valuable piece of advice to anyone thinking about undergoing plastic surgery.
According to the 80-year-old actress, social media are largely responsible for the popularity of these procedures, and she believes that men and women are pursuing a beauty ideal that does not reflect reality.
“If women or men feel seriously diminished, defeated, or depressed when they look in the mirror and feel down about what they see, and they have the financial and mental means, or whatever it may be, to change that, great,” Mirren told Elle magazine.
“I really think that because of social media and what apps can do, you can look at reality and literally become depressed. I think that is a very, very sad situation.”

But according to the Oscar winner, there is a much cheaper alternative than plastic surgery that can be done at home and could influence someone’s desire to undergo a procedure to feel younger.
“Before you think about anything else, invest in really good lighting in your bathroom, so that every time you look in the mirror, you are beautifully lit and look great,” she told the publication. “It’s much cheaper than getting a facelift.”
“I’m completely serious about the importance of good bathroom lighting,” she continued. “Bad lighting is very depressing. I think it would be a terrible mistake to have plastic surgery in your early twenties. The face changes. I don’t like criticizing or attacking people for doing what makes them happy. But trying to look like a fake photo of yourself would be terrible,” she concluded.
