Harrison Ford said in a recent interview that he struggled with depression while he was in college, but that acting classes helped him recover.
The 83-year-old actor spoke openly about the mental health issue he faced in his youth and how his first theater class changed everything for him.
According to a report by People, during his appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast, Ford described the difficult period he went through as a student at Ripon College in Wisconsin, USA.
“I would get up from my single bed, go to the phone, order a pizza, go back and lie down until the pizza arrived. I would eat the pizza, throw the box in a corner, and go back to sleep,” he recalled.
“I had a single room and classes to attend, but I rarely ventured out. I was more than depressed. I think I was sick,” Ford said. “I was socially ill, psychologically unwell.”

Ford explained that, in order to improve his grades, he ended up enrolling in theater classes without really knowing what they would be like or what he would have to do. According to him, the whole experience turned out to be a big surprise.
“They were doing something I didn’t really understand, and they were telling stories about life and existence, and some of them were exceptional in their ability to understand human behavior. And I think I just found my place among storytellers. It really changed my world, changed my life.”
Ford’s career spans more than six decades and includes some of the most iconic and memorable characters in cinema, such as Han Solo in “Star Wars” and Indiana Jones. Currently, the actor stars alongside Jason Segel in the series “Shrinking” on Apple TV+.
