With the confirmation of the fourth season of Emily in Paris, the Netflix series has not been well-received by the French. Last Monday (5), locations were found vandalized with slogans like “Emily is not welcome”.
According to the website Paris Secret, locals are unhappy with the number of tourists coming to the area because of the series. “However, this idealized representation causes anger among Parisians, who believe the series does not reflect the reality of their daily lives, which may resonate with the famous ‘Paris Syndrome’,” wrote Alexandre Lasry for Paris Secret.
“Paris Syndrome” is a phenomenon noticed by Japanese psychiatrist Hiroaki Ōta in the 1980s when he lived in the French capital, describing the frustration of Japanese tourists at the time who expected a more luxurious Paris. Instead, they encountered dirty streets, crowded transportation, a real shock of expectations.
Emily in Paris tells the story of Emily (Lily Colins), an American advertising executive who must juggle her professional and personal life after moving to the city. The series is exclusive to Netflix and has yet to have a premiere date for the fourth season.
