Frankie Muniz, star of Malcolm in the Middle, recently addressed claims that he has memory problems after an old statement, which he says was taken out of context.
The 40-year-old actor is returning to TV with a reboot of Malcolm in the Middle, which premieres next Friday (10) on Disney+. In a recent interview on Inside of You, the podcast hosted by Michael Rosenbaum, he spoke about his alleged memory issue.
Rumors that Muniz might have memory problems began after an interview with People magazine in 2019, when the actor said he had forgotten much of his childhood. “Only I know what it’s like to be me. Or to have my brain,” he said at the time.
“So, I’m only reminded of how bad my memory is when people I see come up to me and say, ‘Oh, do you remember when we did this? Remember when we went on that trip to this country?’ And I don’t remember that, but in my head, it’s not like I feel bad or sad about it.”
Now, he has had the chance to clarify the matter. “Just to bring up the memory thing a little bit, almost to clear the air. The story was taken out of context in a way. I don’t have memory problems, I have a bad memory,” Muniz emphasized.
The actor added that his memory can be very good at times, especially when it comes to memorizing his lines. “For years now, I’ve been trying to figure out why I don’t absorb so many things. Well, since I was 8 years old, I’ve been doing things nonstop, flying here and doing that and just crazy and cool things,” he explained.
“And then I’ve also been an actor my whole life, where every day I’m pretending to be someone else and having someone else’s emotions and someone else’s happiness or sadness or anger or someone’s love interest and all those things.”
“They say ‘cut’ when you’re done with the scene and you forget it. You never think about it again, and then you move on to the next emotion or the next day or the next character. And I almost feel like part of that has to do with the fact that I’m so used to just going […] and moving on that I don’t even remember it. I don’t even really take it in,” Muniz added.
