Donald Trump interrupted a speech to make a rather curious comment about his marriage to Melania Trump last Tuesday (28), during a visit by King Charles to the White House.

The topic came up while Trump was talking about the life story of his mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, who was born in Scotland. “She came to America at 19, met my incredible father, we loved him so much, we all loved him, we loved her, we loved him: Fred,” he began.

“And they were married for 63 years. And, uh, excuse me, if you don’t mind, that’s a record we won’t be able to break, darling,” Trump said after turning to his wife, Melania. “I’m sorry, it just won’t work that way. We’ll get along, but not that well.”

The joke came days after the Trumps attended the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday (25) at the Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C., where gunshots were heard after a suspect, identified as Cole Thomas Allen, 31, ran past security in an alleged assassination attempt.

Jimmy Kimmel also joked about the matter last week, saying Melania had the glow of a “future widow.” In response, Melania issued a rare public statement condemning Kimmel’s remark and calling for him to be fired from his show on the ABC network.

In Monday’s (27) episode of his show, the host emphasized that the joke was only about the large age difference between Melania and the American president, as well as the “look of joy” seen on her face “every time they are together.”

“I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject. And I think a great place to start dialing that back would be to talk to your husband about it,” Kimmel said in his monologue, before receiving applause from the audience.
