Van Dyke wrote in The Times of London about the sadness he feels after seeing so many loved ones pass away.
“All my dearest lifelong friends are gone, which is as lonely as it sounds,” the “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” actor told the publication.
He spoke about his first wife, Margie Willet, to whom he was married for 36 years, with whom he had four children, and from whom he divorced in 1984. And about his partner Michelle Triola, with whom he was together for 30 years.
Both died two years apart, in 2007 and 2009.
Van Dyke said he feels “diminished” as he approaches his 100th birthday, because old age prevents him from living life intensely.
The actor shared that after 60 years of continuous work, he can no longer take on new acting roles or attend glamorous parties as he used to.
“That kind of travel takes so much out of me that I have to say no,” the star said.
Van Dyke noted that the only thing keeping him active is being married to a woman half his age.
“Without a doubt, our ongoing romance is the most important reason I haven’t turned into a grumpy hermit,” he said.
He remarried in 2012, at age 86, to TV producer Arlene Silver, who is 46 years younger than him.
