The new film by Daniel Craig, “Queer,” marks a significant change in his post-James Bond career.

Based on the book by William S. Burroughs, the drama follows Lee, an alcoholic and drug addict in 1940s Mexico, who pursues younger men. Craig’s character, with his debauched lifestyle, faces an emotional dilemma as he falls deeply in love with Allerton, played by Drew Starkey, and desperately tries to create a connection with him.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes, the film presents a bold and unconventional narrative.

Craig, who had long wished to work with Guadagnino, stated in an interview that scripts like this are rare and that he was interested in the artistic journey, even without knowing what the final outcome would be. His goal was to create something beautiful and memorable centered around love.

Although some suggest that “Queer” is a shift in direction after his role as 007, Craig recalls that provocative films have always been part of his journey, citing examples from his earlier career, such as “Love is the Devil.”

“Certainly, the reason I wanted to get into filmmaking was because of movies like this. It’s something I did a lot early in my career, before I started doing the other thing.”

The film was screened at the New York Film Festival, wrapping up a busy weekend at the event.
